The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was sentenced of orchestrating a military coup in last fall and handed more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he remained under home detention pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official the presiding justice said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a preventative measure after fresh information emerged.

This involved seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a public vigil that could "allow for a possible escape.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the arrest, the magistrate said information from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the protest called by his child.

His son, his son Flávio, who works as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or observe everything from your phone there on your sofa? I urge you to battle with us."

He said the vigil would be so backers could "pray for his health and for the return of democracy in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the potential of Bolsonaro's "relocation to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a history of arranging to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.

The judicial paperwork highlights that the United States embassy in the capital, the capital city, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.

Global Responses

His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow populist conservative US President President Trump, leading him to implement a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.

The former president is being detained in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will experience a imprisonment assessment on Sunday.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to authorize him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with tracking devices.

They also requested that he be authorized to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he demanded regular treatment for respiratory ailments and other health problems.

Background on Conviction

He was convicted of orchestrating a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Lula.

High Court judges said that he knew of a scheme which involved plans to assassinate the current president and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been managing the former president's case.

The plot was thwarted because it didn't receive the endorsement of the armed forces officials. His successor was sworn in without incident on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, thousands of his followers attacked and damaged government buildings in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The law enforcement intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The justices found that the protesters had been incited by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, reestablish control and return him to office.

At the period, the legal team called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also banned from running for public office until the year 2060 - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the 2026 presidential election.
